Riga

Riga is the capital of Latvia and, with 720,000 inhabitants and up to 1,100,000 in the greater Riga area, also the largest city in the Baltic States. It is situated on either side of the Daugava River, where it flows into the Baltic Sea. Founded in 1201, this former Hanseatic League member is one of the oldest medieval cities in Europe and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the political, economic, and cultural centre of Latvia and the transport hub of the Baltics.
